A free pre-concert talk on Handel and Israel in Egypt will be presented by Dorothy Andries, classical music writer and critic of the Pioneer Press, from 2:00-2:40 p.m. in Werner Hall at Temple Beth-El. An area of concert seats will be reserved for those who attend the talk.
Israel in Egypt, written for six soloists and double chorus, tells the story of the plague-ridden persuasion of Pharaoh to allow the enslaved Israelites to leave Egypt.
NSCS will be joined by a full orchestra of top instrumentalists with Concert Master Martin Davids.
Soprano Máire O'Brien, mezzo soprano Angela Young Smucker, tenor Kurt R. Hansen, basses Ryan O'Mealey and Peter Van De Graaff, and Donald Chen Young Artist Award winner soprano Alison Wahl will be featured.
We had a wonderful 75th Anniversary Gala and Soireé on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the Unitarian Church of Evanston! In addition to our retrospective concert, the evening featured a silent auction, raffle, and champagne reception. Corey Grigg, the first Donald Chen Young Artist Award winner, was the baritone soloists at the concert, which featured the world premiere of Pleasure Tunes My Tongue by Anne Heider, commissioned by former NSCS president David Hunt for our 75th Anniversary Season. We also sang excerpts from two pieces commissioned for our 50th Anniversary Season: "The Cosmos" from The Geometry of Music by Donald Draganski and "Epilogue" from A Reason for Singing by Dan Tucker. Don Draganski and the family of Dan Tucker attended the gala, as well as our former Music Director Donald Chen.
A good time was had by all!
