FINAL BLUE NOTES FOR THE SIXTY-NINTH SEASON THURSDAY, MAY 26, 2005

This evening, please welcome David Hoose, who is stepping in for Larry Rachleff to conduct the Beethoven Ninth . Until recently the conductor of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Hoose is a professor of music at Boston University , where he conducts the school's symphony orchestra. He has been music director of Collage New Music since 1991 and the Cantata Singers and Ensemble since 1993, and has received recognition for "adventurous programming" with both groups. About the Ninth , he says that--after the "enormous questions" about human life posed by the orchestra in the first three movements--Beethoven's music "moves to a much higher level" in the fourth movement, where "the human voice is needed." (quotations from Pioneer Press)

From Donald:

Thank you all so much for your hard work and effort these past few weeks. Tuesday's rehearsal was excellent; you were focused and gave it your all. My special thanks to Antje for her expert coaching; her gracious, good-humored persistence has produced outstanding results. Now, a few points to remember for our final rehearsals and the concert.

Rehearsals:

•  Be as mentally focused during rehearsals as you would be in the concert.

•  Listen carefully, follow new or changed instructions graciously and professionally, and have a pencil at the ready to mark each one in the score.

•  Be flexible. Be prepared to move to new seating arrangements if needed for the right balance at Pick-Staiger.

•  Pace yourself carefully; don't oversing

Concert:

•  You are a performer, a part of a visual tableau.

•  During the first movements, sit as quietly as possible; don't sway or move with the music.

•  When you stand, hold your music up in position and focus on the conductor even when not singing during the interludes.

•  Don't turn or rustle pages during ANY silence in the music

•  After the initial applause, when the conductor and soloists leave the stage, the chorus should sit. (Watch Julie McDowell.)

•  Stand again on cue from David or Donald; sit again when the conductor leaves the stage.

•  If the orchestra members applaud the soloists or conductor, please feel free to join them. However, keep a careful eye on the conductor and Donald so as not to be still applauding when the chorus or the entire ensemble is acknowledged.

•  Treasure this opportunity to be singing with this fantastic orchestra.
