BLUE NOTES FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2005
Many thanks to Trinity Lutheran Church for opening its doors to us
this evening on short notice. Just a word about the Unitarian Church : Sandra
Robinson, the church manager-- who is always very accommodating--had our
reservation for this first rehearsal but was not consulted about committing
the church grounds to the Camp Casey rally. In fact, she was scurrying to
locate additional parking for our use. However, because of the possibility
of a large crowd and its attendant problems, Donald wisely chose to come
here instead. Auditions have been postponed until next week, when we will
be back at our usual stand.
This coming Saturday evening, September 10, the Music Institute of
Chicago is presenting a benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina survivors.
It will be held at 7:30 in the Institute's Evanston venue, 617 Grove Street
. No further details are available at this time.
The Publicity team of Lenore Dupuis and Pat Seidl is in the process
of updating the NSCS media contact list. If you receive any of the following
publications, please see Pat during a rehearsal break or contact her at pbs0508@yahoo.com: Chicago
Sun-Times , Evanston Express , a publication from Mew City
Communications, The Daily Herald , Pulitzer-Lerner News, The
Chicago Reader , The Roundtable , Vital Times.
Available in the church lobby during this evening's break are the
following:
--copies of the August Blue Notes , in case you didn't receive
one in the mail.
--copies of the 2005-2006 brochure-to be distributed wisely. (Remember
if you mail one, you must use a 37-cent stamp since the bulk mailing permit
doesn't cover individual items .) Names of persons to be added to our
mailing list are always welcome.
--several copies of last year's brochure,
which will be recycled if they are not taken.
--copies of the new Membership Guide.
-- many leftover copies of a handout prepared initially
for the Evanston Arts Council to distribute at two summer art fairs (from
which we received the names of over 60 interested people to add to our database).
The remainder are available for us to give out as we see fit-but placing
them under windshield wiper blades requires a special permit.
About music: One of the scores that we purchased this evening is for
Schumann's Das Paradies und die Peri , which we will not sing until
next June. As Donald explained in the August Blue Notes , he plans
to work on this selection throughout the year. And several of us did not
receive copies of Ave Rex today-simply because we can get no more
at this time; hopefully, this situation will be remedied by next week. Also
next week, several other works for the holiday concert may be here; plan
on spending about $5.00 more when they arrive. Our librarian, Gary Hendrickson,
has been hard at work in an effort to have as much music available as soon
as possible.
The NSCS Board meets at 9:00 this coming Saturday morning, September
10, at St. John's Lutheran Church , 1235 Wilmette Avenue . Any NSCS member
may have an item placed on the Board's agenda by seeing President David Hunt.

ABOUT A UNIQUE CHORAL OPPORTUNITY
Founded in January 2005 by NSCS singer Melinda Pollock, Sing
To Live - Live To Sing brings
together singers, both men and women, whose lives have been directly or
indirectly touched by breast cancer, as well as those who share their concerns.
This not-for-profit chorus, designed for all voices, provides an interactive
musical experience that celebrates hope and survival. This year it looks
forward to establishing a presence in the community; plans for the future
include donating proceeds from concert performances to breast cancer programs
in the Chicago area.
Sing To Live is directed by Dr. Wilbert
O. Watkin, who received his PhD in Music Education and Conducting from Florida
State University, has taught on the campuses of Northern Illinois University
and DePaul University, and previously held the position of Director of Choral
Activities at Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. Since moving to the Chicago
area, he has conducted the mixed chorus Unison, under the auspices of Windy
City Performing Arts. He has also taught private voice and currently serves
as the Chancel Choir Director at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Oak Park
.
Preparations begin this fall for a concert to be held at the Music
Institute of Chicago in Evanston , on Saturday, November 12. Weekly rehearsals
are held on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. , from September 15
through November 10, at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Oak Park , which
has ample parking and is close to the el.
To join, email info@singtolive.org or call 773-250-SING. In your email
or voice mail, please include the following: your name, address, and phone
number, your email address, and what part you sing (soprano, alto, tenor,
bass). There are no auditions and no membership fees.
ABOUT BLUE NOTES
Blue Notes is the weekly "newspaper" for
members of the North Shore Choral Society. It contains information directly
about NSCS (such as most of the information on the previous page), plus additional
information about musical events in Evanston and the greater Chicago community
(such as the preceding announcement on this page). It is also a place where
individuals may post information about themselves-like marriage and birth
announcements, appearances in other musical performances, and other noteworthy
events.
Blue Notes is posted on the NSCS website
(www.northshorechoral.org) every week. Any member is welcome to make a contribution
to Blue Notes -with the understanding that this contribution may
be edited, mostly for space concerns. To have an item included in Blue
Notes , contact General Manager Len Barker at lenpbarker@comcast.net or
847/272-2351 no later than the Sunday preceding a rehearsal.
How many choral conductors does it take to change a light bulb?
No one knows-because no one is looking.
