BLUE NOTES FOR TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2005

Though they've been singing with us for a number of weeks, tonight is the formal reception for these twelve new members who are a part of our 70 th season:

  Kerstin Alischoewski     Alexandra Lexton-Metzner

  Lauren Bauerschmidt     Carlie Miklik

  Suni Kartha         Fred O'Donnell

  Eli Kramer         Asher Streets
  Nicholas Krupp       Charlotte Thiemecke-Floyd

  Alexandria Kung       Krista Walton

This evening is an appropriate time for all of us to wear our nametags. (Remember that Anthony Green is ready to replace any that are worn out or have gone astray.)

Thanks to all who are providing refreshments for this occasion, and who are helping to set up beforehand and clear away afterwards. And special thanks to Julie McDowell for organizing this fête.

And while we're enjoying the refreshments is a good time to buy tickets-season subscriptions as well as individual concerts-from Paul Siegal.

The fall patron mailing has been sent-thanks to the efforts of these people: Fusayo Errico, JoAnne Gerules, Bruce Gladfelter, Anthony Green, Tom Keller, Inge Kistler, Marj Lundy , Harry Vroegh., Barbara Weiner, and Len Barker. Special thanks to Patrons Chair Kay Rossiter, who once again spearheaded this entire operation and roused us to action at last week's rehearsal.

If you're missing any of the music for this season, please see Librarian Gary Hendrickson this evening. These are the pieces you should have:

  For the holiday concert:

Ave Rex (the real thing, not the Kinko version)

     Carol of the Drum

     Two Spanish Carols

     Ring Out, Ye Crystal Spheres

     Rejoice!

     The Angel Gabriel

   For the March concert:

     Carmina Burana

   For the June concert:

     Das Paradies und die Peri

The deadline for selling program ads is fast approaching. This an opportunity for any of us to help with the financial support of NSCS by contacting businesses to place ads in three of this year's programs. Contracts and previous programs are on the back table. See Debbie Geismar with any questions.

Also available are these items:

•  the up-to-datest membership lists

•  translations of Carmina Burana

•  program notes for the December concert

•  program notes for Das Paradies und die Peri

•  last week's Blue Notes

•  this season's brochures

If you're interested in working to develop an outreach program for NSCS-both in our own area and farther afield, please contact Karen Rigotti.

Next Tuesday, colorful posters for the holiday concert will ready for distribution throughout our neighborhoods.

The 2006 season marks the 25 th anniversary of the Berkshire Choral Festival. To commemorate this occasion, an outstanding array of programs has been scheduled-not only in Sheffield but also in Canterbury and Salzburg . For details, consult the BCF website: http://www.chorus.org/conductor1.htm. More information will be forthcoming after the first of the year.

At the back table are pink flyers announcing the first concert of the Sing To Live Community Chorus on Saturday, November 12, at the Music Institute of Chicago in Evanston . Also available are brochures about this chorus.

For something in next Tuesday's Blue Notes , contact Len Barker: 847/273-2351 or lenpbarker@comcast.net.

Comments from a conductor (not ours, of course):

"It sounds as if you're all doing your income taxes."

"It says accelerando . It's not like falling downstairs."

"Imagine you're getting paid for what you do."

"Now forget all the nasty things I said and sing naturally."

"It's a place you can fake, but fake softer."

"Pretend you took the parts home and practiced them."

"You're all wondering what speed it will be. Well, so am I."

"You should sing a soft forte."

"This piece is based on harmony, so you have to hit the right notes."

"It's very hard to raise money for something that sounds like that."

"There is a lot of fishing for notes. I wish you would catch them."

  "Above all, don't look worried."

  "If you won't watch, I won't listen."

"Let's pretend we played that right and go to letter A."
